Looking Back to Our Roots: First Covenant is 140 Years Old! Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 10:30am

First Covenant Church of Saint Paul has had a fascinating history on the East Side. Working class Swedish Christians, who left their homes and relatives for a better future in the land of opportunity, also sought a deeper relationship with their God and their fellow Swedish immigrants. These courageous and faithful men and women called themselves "Mission Friends" and formed The Svenska Evangeliska Lutherska Missionsforsamlingen in 1874. What has changed over these 140 years? What is still the same?

By 2000, worship services had undergone an amplification revolution and First Covenant Church offered both contemporary and traditional services each Sunday morning. When Richard Voth became Minister of Music and Arts in 2005, the choir and the worship team began sharing leadership of the singing. Everything was more casual than in the past and everone dressed according to their preference for public social occasions - blue jeans and baseball caps sat next to evening gowns at every venue in the Twin Cities including First Covenant. To celebrate our church's birthday on April 27, we are inviting you to wear your tee shirt from any of the musicals, camps or other "hsitoric" FCC events, or wear clothing distinctive to your ethnic heritage - your Swedish Lucia Singer dress, Norwegian sweater, traditional Hmong costume, Latino/Hispanic style, African attire, Italian, German...

This is a festive event. Join us for a time of worship and celebration as we revisit the stories that shaped our past and continue to influence our future as 21st century Mission Friends.

Looking Forward with Roots - Roots Covenant Church Official Birth! Sunday, April 27, 3:00pm

Roots is a new church for misfits: We're not ethnic enough, American enough, liberal enough, conservative enough, religious enough, secular enough, extroverted enough, introverted enough, progressive enough or traditional enough. Misfits are those who don't fit in the cultural categories of our day. Although they don't fit the world's ways of thinking, we believe that Jesus loves misfits! the vision of Roots is "to invite misfits to become a new people rooted in Christ, who passionately love God and perposefully seek the renewal of our city." If you desire to see misfits come to find community and identity in Jesus, please join us and INVITE others to ths official kick-off for our weekly worship gatherings.
